My gut tells me I know what I should do but I thought I would see what you guys think. I just picked up a 35 hp 87 Force to put on my pontoon and going through the lower unit, I noticed the seal surface on the upper seal area above the impellor housing is pretty worn. I was wondering what adverse affects this may cause. Will I loose water pressure? I will try to take some pics later and get them posted.

Is the shaft worn or just the seal?
If it's just the seal?? you can slide a piece of hose over the shaft and slide it all the way down to the top of the pump.
Mercury uses this kind of seal on some of their products.

The seal can be replaced. F458736
This can be found all over.

It's the shaft. The groove is fairly deep and wide. I didn't get a chance to take a pic yet. We had some pretty bad storms last night.

If it's a deep groove??
I fill them with Marine Tex and sand it smooth.

The neighbor kid bought a small outboard.
Leaking gear oil at the driveshaft seal.
I filled it with MT and sanded it smooth.
Worked great.

Gotta have it ABSOLUTELY clean and grease free.
Use 60g sand paper before you apply MT and 120g after to smooth it.

That's a good idea. It's not the oil seal but the water seal on the impellor housing where the wear is. I found a used shaft but it had a groove in it in the same place but was in better shape than mine. I may spring for the $60 they want for it if it comes to that.

The shaft just pulls out.
The Marine Tex would work in either place
Fill it and wrap it with saran wrap or something to help smooth it out.

After it hardens, use a drill and a mild file.
Then 120g sand paper.

Thanks JerryJerry05. I have the lower all torn down already. Just waiting on my seal kit. I have a lower I rebuilt for my 71 45hp but it has more splines. Go figure.
