Once again I need your help. Got motor put back in and I went with the suggestion on putting grease on bolt threads. Ran into another problem. Tried starting motor and it was backfiring. Checked TDC timing marks. Seems TDC was lined up with #2 cylinder. Seems the key sheared off. Pulled the flywheel. The part broken into the crankshaft is really stuck in there. Almost looks welded in there. Any tricks to remove this or do I just need to be real careful with a drill. I dont have a welding torch. I do have a propane torch. I am thinking heat. Any help will be appreciated!

Which bolt threads did you grease? If the flywheel is torqued correctly, it would not shear the key, and flywheel goes on dry.

I got to thinking. That key is moon shaped. I should be able to knock it out with a centerpunch.

Yes the punch or screwdriver will work.
The key can shear for about no or any reason.
This happened to me. In 1988, brand new motor with 6 hrs.
20 miles away from home. Port motor will NOT start.
Luckily I have twin motors.
The key was sheared?????

The grease on the threads is ok just don't get any on the taper or on the flywheel taper.
Heat can melt the top seal on the top of the crank.
Then you will possibly suck air in #1 cyl??

 It's tuorqed.to 85/90#
