I recently acquired a 1986 Force 15 that has been basement kept for the last 10 years. My grandfather put less than 100 hours on the motor and took impeccable care of it. I am purchasing a 16 foot aluminum boat for it and I contacted the local marina to see if they should go over it before I start the engine and use it. I was told to run the motor and see if it runs good first. He said that parts are impossible to get for the motor and I should just run it as long as it seems good.

My question is that is it really impossible to get servicing parts for the motor. I would like to replace seals, impeller and gaskets in the lower and have the carb rebuilt. Is it really impossible to get these parts or is it that the marina mechanic just doens't want to mess with an old motor. It really is in great shape, I just think after sitting that long it should be gone through.

The shops don't seem to want to work on Force or Chrysler outboards.
99% of the parts can be had and not that hard to find.

They are easy to work on too.

Change the oil in the lower. Use NEW!!!! seals.
The old style plastic were a 1 time only use.
You might get them to re-seal but maybe not.
I use Mercury or Mercruiser seals. Cheap and readily available.
Any plastic seals are a 1 time use the Mercury ones can be used again and again.

Change the oil and take it for spin.
Then check the oil for water.
No reason to reseal if not needed.
My lower unit seals are 28 years old and still work.

Clean the carb making sure the small passages in the jets are open.

Probably no thermo in that unit.
Just make sure the old impeller comes out in 1 piece.
WD-40 spray the moving parts.
There are grease fittings on the throttle and the mid section.
Adding grease now can make the zerks pop out.
Be careful when adding grease.
IF??? its hard adding grease ?? use a small propane torch to loosen the old.
Too hot can melt the plastic bushings in the kingpin area.

Good luck.

1986 Force 15Hp should be a rebanded Chrysler 15Hp then as jerryjerry says most parts can found.
Impeller, headgasket, condenser, fuelpump rebuild kit are available.

If it has magneto ignition points is N/A but condensers and coils are available. If it has CDI system it should be the same as late 70.s and early 80.s Chrysler.
CDI Electronic has aftermarket parts.

Mastertech and Franz Marine has parts and many of the webshops too.

Running in a barrel or bucket.
The water needs to be deep!!
3-4 inches over the cavitation plate.
Any shallower?? it won't pick up water.
