I have a 1971 20hp outboard. It has been sitting in pieces for 25 years. I am going to try to get it running and put it on a jon boat. I think one coil is bad. How do I know that the coil is bad and it is not the points? I also need to know what type of spark plugs it takes and the gap. Thanks.

Remove the flywheel and clean the points. Gap them to 020 in and check for spark.
If you have a VOM, measure the prime side of the coils it should read about 0,5-1,5 Ohm.
The secondary side should read about 6-8 kOhm.

Factory spec for plugs was Champoin J4J or NGK B6S and gap 030 in.

It is importent to torque the flywheel to right value. If not you would maybe share the key.
Spec. is 45 ft-lb for flywheel, autoelectric armatur bolt 25 ft-lb.

I cleaned the points and set the gap to 020, now getting fire from both coils! The points looked brand new so I figured they were fine-wrong!
