I just picked up a 97 Force 15hp outboard and ended up having to replace the lower housing on the lower unit. I didnt think to check before I took it apart, but when reverse is selected should it lock into place on the lever, or is it something that needs pressure on it the whole time to stay in reverse. After I got it back together it goes into reverse if I press and hold the lever. I had the lower unit apart and adjusted the shift rob, but it doesnt feel like there is enough movement in the lower cog to lock into reverse, and it looks like if the upper linkage went any lower it would jjit . Do I take it apart and see whats up, or is it right with not locking?

It should lock in place.
Loosen everything and start over.
You sure you installed the dog and spring right?

No, I am not sure that it is completely correct when I installed it. When I installed it the dog into the lower unit I placed it down into the channel and installed the clip over it, then slid the lower shaft into the "C' portion of it.
