Force outboard lower unit shift rod

Hey everyone i have a 1990 force 150 i just purchased a lower unit for , the shift rod that sticks out of the lower unit has a small bend in it at the top , can i just unscrew it and screw a good one in ???

I'm not sure of the answer, but can't you just put a small vice on the rod and straiten ?

If you unscrew it, it will disengage from the shifting coupler which may require dis-assembly to get it back into place.
