Starter would work intermittently. Now when i try to start it throws the gear up but as soon as it feels resistance on flywheel it drops back down. There is a tiny bit of play on the starter shaft enough to make it rattle when you shake it. But the whole shaft has several mm of slop up and down. I am assuming there should be no play in it? Battery fully charges, all connections cleaned and re tightened down. So should not be from poor connection. Any other ideas i should try before investing in a new starter.

If you think the starter drive pinion is worn out, you can actually replace just the pinion assembly itself. The part number is F15175. You also might want to open and clean the entire starter motor itself.

Weak starter.
Loose magnets? = new starter.
A wobble on the armature? The top plate of the starter the bushing's bad and probably needs a new plate.
Clean the armature where the brushes ride.
You can buy a new aftermarket cheaper than getting this one rebuilt by a starter joint.
One in my area wants 110$ to rebuild a 100$ starter.

After it's rebuilt do a compression test.

Will pull starter off tomorrow and look at it. Double checked all connections still doing same thing except now when itss spinning its making a horrible sound it was not making before when it was spinning. A bearing was mentioned....it sort of sounds like a bearing spinning/trying to spin without lubrication maybe. Im at a point where i am likely buying a new starter but ill open it up for exploratory purposes i guess

No bearings in that starter, just bushings.
Any moving parts would be the brushes/springs and the armature.
Yup take it apart and let us know.

Personally, from the look of the armature, you'd be better off getting a new starter. It costs less than $80. And if you want to you can clean and refurb the old one as a standby unit.

THe armature needs some sandpaper and a good cleaning.

The only thing that would bother me is where the bushing is on the top cover.
If it has a lot of slop then the top plate needs to be replaced.
Otherwise the starter can be redone.
Or just buy a new one.
Brush kits on E=bay $14

Cleaned up and put it. Still shoots gear up and as soon as it touches flywheel comes back down. Will load test battery and check voltage at starter next

Well battery was nit charged 100% had some confusion on new charger. When it hits 100 ill see what happens and if not will bring to work to put battery on tester. And may need new multimeter as its near impossible to see voltage instantly so need a min max function

Yup a bad battery could be the problem.

They usually only used 450cca on new boats.
That's usually all that's needed.

But yours could have a bad cell???
