I recently acquired a Force 5 HP (about 1989) and it does not appear to have anything to hold it up it up in the tilted position.
Is it missing some key part or am I just a clueless newbie?

Post parts diagram or post good close pictures from the area where the motor is clamped to boat. Item 66 on the diagram attached 8hp midsection.gif might be the pin/rod needed. Post a pic of your motor in that general area.

Wick, the parts diagram you posted looks like a later Mercury.
It shows a bunch of stuff the 89 5hp doesn't have.
The 5 appears to NOT have a tilt lock.
It does have a pin that is used in positioning the motor up some and a lock for the pin.

Find a parts diagram for an 89 5hp. boatsdotnet has a good pic.

Thanks for the replies.
Now I need to get busy and design something a little better than the wood 2x2 that the previous owner was using.

Brackets from Etc. Hardware to make a folding Sawhorse. Fitted above your plastic 55 Gal Drum cut down to height needed. I added a drain valve close to the bottom to connect my water hose to drain.

Show the bracket area that clamps to the boat and I feel someone will share how to tilt it.
