I have a 1997 force 40hp 2 stroke serial # OE246618 starts right up, take it out runs great at first at 5200 rpm then cuts down to about 3000 rpm. If I leave it sit for a while then start it back up runs great again. Would anyone have any suggestions on what's going on with the motor? Thanks

Welcome,
The vent line from the tank, sounds like it's clogged or the tank vent isn't open far enough??
Built in tank?
Or portable tank.

Yes its a built-in tank. I'm going to try to clean the vent tube tomorrow.

This could be when old ignition parts get hot/overheat, you can't start the motor for around 10-15 min until they cool down and start working again.
If it's not fuel, I would start testing ignition parts. outboard ignition.com has troubleshooting and testing for all ignition parts, cdielectronics.com has the same thing too.

I never heard of parts on an outboard "getting hot" and stop working.
Usually they stop working.
Now if it was an I/O with an automotive coil, yes that might happen.

I think it's my fuel pump. I have to keep pumping the primer bulb to fill the inline filter.
