No the rubber boot is not absolutely necessary, you can just coat the splines (not the top of the shaft, then it might make a hydrulic lock) with marine grease or antiseize compound.

The best is if you coat the splines with grease and put the boot back, that will make it much easier to disassemble the LU from the middleg next time.

Yeah I used some marine grease on the splines.I guess if I have to take off lower unit again may put it back on and try to install with it on. I found a pic of how he seal goes on the spline

Great job, well done Mo1. Thanks for the picture of the boot and metal holder/ retainer, ours fell on the ground when we removed our LU, and were not sure how it went back together.

It's definitely pumping water a lot better and the old impeller didn't even look that bad . The big test will be to see if I still get water in the gearbox after the seal replacement. Sure smokes a lot in that small bucket
