Winterizing time. Drained gear oil,, didn't seem like much came out.... but had just a trace of water...may have just been condensation there was so little. The question is....all the gears are in the stump stabber part of the very lower end. Your supposed to pump oil into the drain until it comes out the vent. The vent is 11" up from the drain, not far under the water pump. Why do you need gear oil up that high? What needs gear oil that far above the actual gear case itself?

You need the gear oil that high because there is a bronze bushing just below the water pump supporting the upper part of the drive shaft. This bushing keeps the shaft from wobbling, destroying the upper seal and damaging the water pump components. There is no active oil transport to this bushing so the oil level must reach it.

Thanks Frank....that 'splains it! Not near enough came out to fill it THAT full! I suppose that means another repair in the spring to go with the rest! I'll never get this thing in the water!

There should be a bearing just under the pump.
No oil = no lube and bearing failure.
