need to replace lower unit on my 1996 FORCE 40 HP

Hi All,

I have a 1996 FORCE 40 hp motor on my pontoon. I need to find a used / rebuit lower unit for my motor. We hit a rock in lake today propeller and shaft snapped off. I was told that this motor used a mercury lower unit? I can post my engine serial number tomorrow if that helps. Any information you could provide would be helpful

Mercury designed and Mercury type lower unit. The water pump is different and I THINK the driveshaft splines are different--can't be sure though. The bolt pattern is the same as mercury.

NOW: A used lower unit is probably the best way to go because a new propshaft will cost as much and a lower unit and that is assuming the internal gears were not damaged. Look on craigslist or ebay and be patient. You may be able to buy a whole engine in non-running condition and salvage a lower unit for the same price as a lower unit.. The 40 and 50, used the same lower. I am not sure about the 70 and 75. Same props but possible a different drive shaft.
