I am considering buying a Bayliner 285 Cruiser with Mercruiser 4.2l (320HP) Diesel engine. I have never used a Mercruiser engine before and I am not familiar with it and its sensors/gauges. Mercruiser SmartCraft gauges description mentions fuel flow, steering angle, total fuel, .. etc. However, the Smartcraft gaugues users guide notes that fuel, steering and speed/depth sensors are optional. I will have a sounder on board so gps and depth data should not be a problem. I don't know if the diesel engine already comes with (is capable of) diesel fuel flow sensor (that may require differentiating between forward flow as well as unused fuel returned to the tank). Similarly, I don't know if steering angle sensor is "standard".

I am in Turkey and the dealer is not too knowledgeable there. I think they are researching the topic. Can any one help me in determining if/how smartcraft gauges with all necessary sensors are standard or can be applied to this engine/boat?

Thanks,
