Hi I'm new here and have a 1971 evinrude 85hp with cable and pulley steering! I want to convert it to rack and pinion steering or something safer than the cable does anyone have any suggestions for this cause I don't even know where to start! Thanks in advance

Of course you already know that the old Rude used a pulley and cable system. Unfortunately that engine does not have a tilt tube on the engine to accommodate the recent type steering systems. So of course you are going to have to do it the hard way and modify things. Everything you need you can purchase here thru Iboats Store.

You will need at least these things.

The steering helm you can use either of the rotary or rack and pinion. Which ever one will fit best under the dash.

Sadly I have the same problemed setup. I only wish my engine was a tilt tube engine. That would certainly make things so much easier to install a steering setup. I have all the necessary hangers and support items from the old stick steering setup, but I was wanting to see if anything else would work. I see probably not. And that makes for a tricky engine tilt issue as well. Here is a picture of how my steering was setup before I removed all that old junk to rebuild everything. It is a little hard to see but it is how such an engine can be setup up for a steering cable instead of pulleys and such. Hope this helps you out a little...

Actually behind the leaves is the pivotal bracket that you will have to install if you plan on tilting the engine at all. Because a solid rigid mount won't allow the engine to move otherwise. That part would look like this;

As you can see it have the ability to move and angle to accommodate the engine movement...

Ok I figured some custom parts would need to be made on my part... Here's a couple pics of what it looks like at the motor

Not as bad as it could be. I do believe there is a ball joint fitting already available to connect that engine to the steering rod. Where to find it., that I couldn't tell you. May try contacting Teleflex.

I really appreciate the inputs!! I found this and I'm thinking that I can remove the cable from the mount I have and just attach this steering to that and it should work..thanks again
