Remove existing cable and while pulling old cable out, "fish in" a pull rope as well. Thus, easier install of new cable.
Remove old cable and look for its numbers. And before ordering, double check cable length as well. Good video at:

Tip: Don't use boat's manual or online parts guide for cable length details. For my boat, its online parts page clearly stated 14 ft long Rack&Pinion cable replacement. To my surprise, in reality (cable number and double checked the length myself) my boat contained a 5ft long cable.
When ordering new cable, one might want to order complete system (re: With helm and plastic collars) as well. Thus, both helm gears and cable's teeth are factory matched. And, both wear areas are new as well.
