Shift cable length

Is there a specific length, give or take, for the shift cable on my Mercruiser/Alpha One outdrive. I think the cable could do with being replaced, as shifting is a bit stiff and I'm poking around in that area at the moment anyway. The cable that's currently on the boat seems to be much longer than is needed. It leaves the bracket on the manifold and makes a big loop before going down to the outdrive.

I accept that a bit of play or slack may be normal, but this seems to be excessive. Is there a proper part number that I can identify my existing cable by, or as mentioned, a proper length for my needs.

Thanks in advance.
