Unit shifts to reverse fine, forward their is either a lag before engaging or after use, it doesn't engage until high RPM, then jumps into gear. I replaced the shift cable and tried adjusting the stern drive end to several positions but get the same result. The lever moves to all three positions freely when not attached to cable and the props lock in when shifted to revers and forward. Any ideas?
Thanks much as I am out of them.

I forgot to also mention, I replaced the gear oil. It was dark, not cloudy. Replaced with penta synthetic, problem persists.

adjust your shift linkage (back at the drive)

Thanks Scott. I have adjusted the linkage at back of the stern drive but get the same problem. I tried it in normal neutral and then forward and backwards about 1/4" from neutral to see if biasing it one way or the other would cause the forward gear to lock up faster. No difference. I have read about a cone clutch causing this. Anyone have experience on this model and that problem? 2000 5.7 GSi DP-SMTD 1.95
