I picked up an old (1973) 175hp Merc and need info on the controls. Can anyone advise on how they work. Need to know where neutral is. What is the button at the base of throttle for? Also, the words "Factory Rebuilt" and the letter "P" are etched into the serial# plate. Any insight? Sorry, not allowed to add photos.

You can add pics after you have 3 posts.

Not knowing which remote you're talking about, neutral is in the middle between Fwd and Rev. You should be able to feel the the Neutral Detent as the handle is moved.

Is the button on the bottom of the handle? Usually that's the Throttle Only button to allow the motor to be warmed up with a high idle in Neutral. Push the button in and move the handle forward to raise RPM's and the shift is disconnected to keep the drive in neutral. The re-engage the shifter, simply pull the handle back to Neutral and the button should pop out.
