cable adjustments

I have two 1975 50 hp johnsons that I just installed, when I try to put it in gear, the gear pops out at the control box and wont go back to neutral, I would then have to take the box apart, then line the gears back and put the box back together only to have it do it again, when I adjust the cable, it would work one way, and pop out when I put the throttle the other way. It seems like the cable throw is to long or something? I hope someone can help. Thanks, Kent

Welcome aboard chase um, 1st of all which control are you using. There are 3 different types. 2 lever, single lever with the warm up lever on the side and a single lever with the warm up lever on the top. From the sounds of this it is a single lever but which one?

Still trying to understand what you have happening. Those gears shouldn't be jumping.
