Diode or Resistor on a 6 way switch question

BTW, that's a diode, not a resistor.

The diode is there to block electricity from going to the bow nav light(s) when the switch is in the "anchor" position, which lights only the stern light(s). Here's a wiring diagram:

If you have a 6 Terminal Switch, (DPDT, Center OFF), You should be using 5 of the 6 terminals and do not need the Diode. (Preferred Implementation).

When you use a 3 terminal Switch,(SPDT, Center OFF), You will need a Diode rated to handle the Voltage and Current of the Bow (Red/Grn) Lights.

If your switches are illuminated, there will be one more terminal for the switch's internal lamp. 7 or 4 terminals total.
