OMC tilt/trim sending unit, help.

The engine is a 1987 Johnson 50hp with the 2 tube tilt trim unit. When I got this unit it was stuck on the trim side tube. After getting it apart I found the sending unit coil was mangled and wedged into a piston. I now have that repaired. The problem is that inside a piston is a flat V shaped clip that is used as a gound pickup for the sending unit gauge. Actually there should be 2 of these but they are both missing and that part isn't available from OMC anywhere.
Anyone with suggestions on what or how to replace these clips to make the sending unit work to the gauge?
