Re: Shakespeare lift and lay VHF antenna

Have used both those VHF and CB antennae for nearly 30 yrs and in all that time had one go bad (just don't try to use 'em as handholds - had a fat kid bust a 2nd antenna when he grabbed it to catch himself  as he stepped into the boat), so my experience is definitely good. The Galaxy models are s'posed to be even better.

For best reception/transmission mount the antenna as high as you can. If that's the console, IMHO that'll do. Many CC boats without T-tops have 'em there, if not on a bow rail. Try to keep the antenna at least 3' from the radio if possible.

thanks for the info. Unfortunately, if it goes on the console, it's not 3' away; will this cause any major problems ?

IMHO you won't have any problems, but to be sure, temporarily mount the antenna with some tape or something, then try the radio out before drilling holes. A friend has his antenna mounted on his center console rail about 18" from his radio and it works fine. Good luck.
