Trolling Motor and batteries

I just recently (December) bought a 17' bass tracker off of a buddy. I've had to do some work to get it ready for the water as it sat in storage but I think I've just about got it water ready. One of the things on my list of items to do to it is replace the 28lb trolling motor. Talking with my buddy that had it before, it didn't do squat for moving the boat unless it was calm cove. Currently, I am contemplating a Motorguide VariMaxx V75. Such as this one from cabelas.

What else would you recommend looking at? I'm not sold on having a foot control and i don't feel like spending $1K for a auto-pilot unit or remote controlled unit. What are the pros and cons of both from your experience?

Batteries, my buddy mentioned before that he had two starting batteries and one battery for the trolling motor. I'm wanting to go to a 24v trolling motor but, i really only have room (for now, future plans in work for moving the trolling batteries to the front) for three batteries. Am i going to run into issues with only one starting battery if I buy a large starting battery such as an 845 CCA minimum battery? This is starting a 40 HP Johnson. I can't imagine that it takes a whole lot to start this thing. Also, what are some decent on board chargers to look at that won't break the bank? I don't have to have top of the line but don't want junk.

Re: Trolling Motor and batteries

On a boat like that a single starting battery is fine, you should never need more.

As for foot control or remote. A foot control is lower in cost, easy to use and reacts a little quicker. The remote control takes a little getting use to, and may not be as precise in some cases...but.

I use a remote for actual trolling, not just moving a little, with the i-pilot you just set it and go, its hands off until you decide to change the heading. If I wasn't doing this I might go with a foot control.

Welcome to iboats!:welcome:

Yeah, two starting batteries would be silly with a 40 HP outboard. In a pinch, you can pull-start it.

What about the hand control? Right now that's what I'm looking at.
