Howdy!

I just picked up a used Garmin GPS 498. It seems to be a nice unit and has a local chip in it already! YAY!:D

I'm not quite clear as to if the device has an internal antenna or requires an external ( I have one on order). Once powered on it "searches" for a satellite but never seems to locate one (30 minutes). So...does it have an internal antenna? I have read articles that say yes and others that say no.

Garmin would have the answer you need.

I am sure they do and thank you for pointing that out. My thought was perhaps someone here, with a Garmin 498, may have the answer. Personally I believe it's great that many manufacturers provide a support structure to assist those needing assistance. It's almost as nice as having a bunch of friends on a forum that provide a support structure to assist those needing assistance.

The 498 came in two flavors.

Model 010-00504-00 has an internal antenna. Model 010-00504-01 has an external antenna

Thanks. It appears I have the Model 010-00504-01 with the external antenna required. I could not find a model but Garmin support said they could tell me by the serial number which was on the back. My external antenna should arrive next week..YAY!
