Will this work? All the listing I see show it from 1976 to 1983 outboard models.

Does it require the wiring kit #173602 or 173611 to install it?

Ayuh,.... How 'bout some More info,....

A Voltmeter just measures battery voltage, 'n should be independent of the motor,...

for 79 and later controls, it states to use 173611 whick looks like this.

OMC BRP Jonhson Evinrude Plug in Fuse Block Wire Kit 1988 Later 55HP 173611 | eBay

Is the kit required to connect this to the control key switch?

How about a little more info on your boat.
1) Do you have any other gauges on this boat?
2) The reason the part number you are looking at is indicated for a specific range of engines is because the gauges for that engine span all had the same appearance and had nothing to do with the engine itself. It is just the way they looked for that series of engines.

You are looking at the diagram. If you have some 16 gauge wire, a crimping tool, and the proper ring terminals, that's all you need to wire this up.

If your boat has other gauges, hook the +12 volt ("I") terminal to the same terminal on any of the other gauges. 12 volts is 12 volts regardless where you find it. You don't need to get near the ignition switch unless you have no other gauges. As the instructions say, wire the "L" (light) terminal to the NAV terminal on the NAV/ANC (your light) switch or to the "L" terminal on any other gauge.. Ground is ground. Again, if you have other gauges, connect it to the same one you got 12 volts from. Don't make this so difficult.

The only gauge I have is a tach, hour gauge has never worked. I do have a fuse panel that runs other equipment, I'll pull the 12v from that.

It seemed confusing that they stated the harness needed to be used, or simplified the install.

Thanks Silvertip. This is the console, 1973 Starcraft Mariner, 1985 Evinrude 90 VRO.

Ayuh,.... Ya wanta pull 12v from a switched source, not constant 12v, as it'll run the battery down,...
