No power to accessories for 470? Circuit breaker?

Yesterday on the lake while under way lost power to all accessories. No tilt/trim, bilge pump, radio, etc.
Engine starts and runs just fine. Had a light with me... did some poking last place I see +12 is on the push button circuit breaker.... suspect it went bad from respectful age ;)

Looks to be this one:
Blue Sea Medium Duty Push Button Reset-Only Thermal Circuit Breakers - iboats

But I can not figure out what amperage I have....

Or anything else can be wrong? Charging system is converted to 3 wire alternator.

1979 470 2bbl
Engine: 4914682
Outdrive: 5694572

Thanks!

Re: No power to accessories for 470? Circuit breaker?

Since the engine runs, it's not the circuit breaker on the engine, that is what supplies the power to the ignition switch for engine only power. Did you check the breaker with a meter or just try to push it? (your link doesn't work).

Since all your houses systems are dead, I would have to bet there is a 20A or 30A fuse or breaker near the battery or battery switch that supplies power to the fuse panel at the helm. Your trim tilt switch is probably picking up control voltage from the fuse panel.

There is not fuse box - boat was born in 1979.
Trim pump (single solenoid) +12 comes from push button circuit breaker together with a fat red wire that feeds +12 to the helm.
Other side of the push button circuit breaker is fed from starter solenoid.
#3 manual page 381.

I did not have a multimeter with me on the lake, just a light.. and it was dark when I got back.
+12 was on the starter solenoid side of the circuit breaker, not on the other side :(

I will check with multimeter tonight. Can it be that something is grounding the circuit and the circuit breaker will not close the circuit even if reset pushed? I guess I can cut the power and check with multimeter if the breaker is bad....

Anyhow... what amperage this circuit breaker should be?

Thanks Don.

Re: No power to accessories for 470? Circuit breaker?

After some more thinking.... The tach, volts, oil pressure, temp, fuel gauges where working.
THe only things that were not: nav lights, instrument lights, bilge pump, blower and radio.
All of them are fed from that +12 lead off the push button circuit breaker.
All instruments have their own circuits on the wiring harness.

So either circuit breaker is bad (most likely)
or one of the items on that circuit is shorting it.....

You should have a fuse panel under the dash somewhere that provides power for your accessories. Boats older that yours have.
Your boat has two electrical systems
1. Engine electrical, and 2. house circuits.

Your engine circuits are fine, it's your accessory circuits that are bad. Even if your accessories were fed from the engine circuit breaker, if it was bad, then the engine wouldn't start either.

Yes it is the push button circuit breaker.
After studying the wiring diagrams attached I would have to agree with Don that engine should not have run, but it does.
So either
A. Alternator conversion is wired wrong. (most likely)
B. Ignition switch is wired wrong.

Is this right wiring for 3 wire alternator conversion?
The wiring is for different engine, so I think I have it wired wrong.

I think it should be:
Alternator RED to ORANGE that goes to ignition switch,
Alternator OUTPUT to RED/PUR that goes to circuit breaker ,
Alternator PUR/BLK to PUR that goes to choke

is that right?
