Bilge pump WITHOUT Float switch

My boat is equipted with a bilge pump, wired to an on/off switch on the console. I do not have a float switch, the previous owner never installed one. I understand the benefits of a float switch, and think (after reading about it on here) I can wire it up. But is it best to put it on a On/OFF/AUTO switch to replace the on/off switch or wire it directly to the battery? What are the benefits of each?

Thank you

on/off/auto gives you the choice. If your ever going to leave the boat alone in the water you should wire direct to the battery. Its actually the only thing that I don't run from the Batt switch. I like to shut all electrical off when I'm not at my boat. But I have the bilge pump float switch wired direct to the battery.

Run it directly to the battery. Then it will work any time, even you have the battery switch turned off

I also vote for keeping the current on/off switch and hooking the float switch directly to the battery.
