Where to start with volt meter that is not working

Gang,

I've read numerous posts, however I seem to be getting more confused.

Can someone please point me in the right direction and where to start in the search for a solution to a volt meter not working. All other gauges appear to be working fine. Perhaps someone could advise the most likely places to start troubleshooting.

There are only three connections on a voltmeter. +12 volts, ground and connection for the light. Since other gauges are working, and since the gauge wiring is daisy chained from one to the next, all you need to do is verify that the POS terminal has +12 volts on it. Verify that the ground terminal is grounded and that the light terminal has a connection to the light terminal on any other gauge. If all of those are in order, the gauge is toast but I highly doubt that.

I have both a test light and multimeter. Let me take a look at the 3 wire connections and test for 12v and get back to you (pouring rain here all day).

...I'll sometimes boat in the rain, but I never do boat maintenance in the rain. While I'm working I don't drink my beer quick enough and the rain waters it down.

Re: Where to start with volt meter that is not working

I removed the dash gauge panel, and all gauges including the volt gauge had 12v. However, after reinstalling the panel the volt gauge was now working. A brown(?) wire appears as though it may have been kinked and not seated well.

In any event, I don't know what I did but everything is working now.

AS ALWAYS, EXCELLENT ADVICE FROM BOND-O AND SILVERTIP!
