I am about to buy a marine radio the next few weeks or sooner. I was wondering which would be a better choice and why. A handheld model, marine VHF radio or a mountable one. I can think of a few pros and cons for each. But i was wondering what ya'll thought. handheld for portability.... and its cheaper, mountable it wont end up in the drink or get lost? thanks for any advice. :D

Re: Quick question about marine radios:

The handheld will have less range. So it depends on your area of boating. If you have a coast guard station near your area the hand held will be fine if safety is your only reason to have it. If your 10 miles from a marina and need to see if they have a slip or gas etc you will need the tall antenna and 25 watts. Check the regulations before you buy. They are changing.

The only advantage, if you want to call it that, is that some are cheaper than a fixed mount. A handle held with DSC is going to cost more than a fixed mount.
