Faria Tach w 12 pole option ???

I have a 4 cycle faria tach with a 12 pole (OB ALT) setting, what does that mean?
Is this a universal tach that can be used on 4 cycle or two cycle motors?

That is where you match the tach to the stator output. Most outboards have 12 poles which produce 6 pulses. What motor do you have?

I have a 1991 40 hp mercury
