I'm in the market for a used boat and came across a cheap Apelco Marine Radio Model VHF-5200. I am hoping to buy something in the 18-24 foot range and use it on Glendale Lake in west-central PA (near Altoona) for Muskie and Bass fishing and also Lake Erie and Lake Ontario within a few miles of shore for Steelhead, Salmon and Laketrout fishing. So I don't even have my boat bought yet, but was wondering if anyone has experience with this radio and if it would suit my needs. I've never owned a boat before but have had many CB radios. I would want it for safety reasons, emergencies, weather reports, and to communicate with other fishermen.

Welcome to iboats!

That radio does not have DSC (digital selective calling) capability, a vital safety feature. I would buy a brand new radio with DSC Class D capability since you will be going out on big water at least some of the time. DSC is also useful for hailing fellow boaters when you know their MMSI numbers.
