Extra small battery box?

Hi, my project boat is my grandfather's 1971 Mirrocraft Ski-N-Troll aluminum 14'. I need a battery for lights only, no elec start. Historically, we've put a tiny 12v motorcycle/ATV battery 3.5"x6"x7"+/- in a wooden box sitting on the floor near the transom...not exactly secure or spill-proof. I want to mount it on the transom, but battery boxes are big and bulky plastic. Has anybody made one out of wood? any ideas? I want a vintage look and I'm sure somebody's already done what I need to do. Thanks.

Make the basic form out of plywood and then glass it. Or use a nice grade of plywood to make the box and then then coat with clear epoxy resin to waterproof it.
