Re: How to install new temperature gauge
The trim gauge may not be working because the sender is misadjusted or defective, or the wiring is bad. Diagnose first -- then replace whats broken.
Outboards can use either a water temp or a cylinder head temp gauge. The senders are the same. Only the method of mounting is different.
Here is a cylinder head temp sender. It merely bolts to the cylinder head with a head bolt.

The best combination for an outboard is BOTH a WP gauge and an engine TEMP gauge. The WP gauge tells you the pump is working. The TEMP gauge tells you what the engine temp really is. The WP gauge cannot tell you that.
Now then -- is that informative enough for you!
