I am looking to replace my VHF (still works fine but has no DSC) and I want to get a chartplotter, I have a fish finder that still works. I boat on inland waters (Utah mostly) so salt issues are not a concern but want inland maps capability. I ran on to the Standard Horizon CPV350 VHF / Chartplotter combo http://www.standardhorizon.com/inde...643BA843213FE8B8DD6&DivisionID=3&isArchived=0 or http://www.standardhorizon.com/PDF/09MARINE05.pdf and thought that would be a great way to get both and have a large screen too and it appears to sell for about $800 which doesn't seem to bad. It is radar ready which I might get someday because I do help with water search and rescue locally.

So any thoughts or experiences with this unit? Its only NMEA 0183 Should I care? Any better suggestions?

I don't like combo units except as backups. Especially when you combining your only means of communicating with the outside world with your only means of knowing you?re at.

Ship to shore communications is not the place to cut corners. Someone's life may depend on it some day.
