I have connected many GPSMAPS to varous DSC VHF Radios, but I can't get the ICOM M422 to work with my GARMIN GPSMAP 4022. I am using the NMEA 183 cable from the GPSMAP 4012 to the radio. I have attached the NMEA 183 Cable diagram and the ICOM M422 wiring diagram for reference. I have connected 183 white/ radio white - nmea grey/ radio red - blk and orange to common (-) What is the correct way to wire this connection as what I have done isn't working?

Take a good look at the red wire of the 422. There may actually a center core wire with a shield around it. Make sure you aren't hooking up to the shield with the GPS grey wire. The shield probably needs to go to the pink on the GPS.

I am in the process of buying a 422 and that is what I heard.

I have a Garmin 4208 hooked up to an Icom 504A. Do you have individual wires on your radio or RCA plugs?

Either way, red to grey and white to white is correct. Not sure what your doing with the Orange. Orange is not involved in 0183 communications.

Run GPS Black to system ground and tie any shields on the wires coming from the radio to the system grounds as well.

Make sure you go into setup on the GPS and turn 0183 support for port 1. The default for 0183 is off

I have pulled back the shield on both wires coming out of the 422 and only the red wire is attached to the grey. Thanks for the idea ..

I meant orange/white.. the orange/white and black go to common (-). I overlooked the pink.. will connect GPS pink, orange/white and black to common along with shields from VHF red / white. Will also check setup for port 1 and make sure it is on. Thanks .

Thanks to all.. It was the PINK wire not being connected. I connected the shields from the radio data in / out, orange/white, and pink to (-) and all works fine.. Thanks

Re: Garmin GPSMAP 4012 / ICOM M422

Great information! I was about ready to give up until I found this thread. The directions in the Icom book are not very clear. I have a Garmin 4210 and the Icom M422. My mistake was not grounding the shield wires from the M422. This did the trick. Thanks!
