Re: gps antenna tied in with vhf antenna
That's not true. If you'd glue a GPS antenna to the top of a VHF (stupid, but this is only hypothetical anyway) you wouldn't transmit power into the GPS antenna. The radio sends out radio waves, not actual electrical energy. The GPS signal is on a band so far from the VHF signal that it wouldn't recieve anything.
I do not recommend doing that because you don't need to. Any clear view of the sky will work for a GPS. You do not need to mount it as high as possible, it's just a natural tendency for us to do that. Since it's not transmitting it's not looking for "range". The satellite is plenty high enough over the horizon that you don't have to worry about how high you mount your little GPS antenna. You only need a clear view of the sky and she's good to go.
To answer your question, no you may not tie into a VHF antenna for a GPS signal. How well does a CB antenna work with VHF? Not well at all, huh? GPS and VHF are the same way. Use ONLY approved antennas for your unit or you will be sadly disappointed in it's performance.
