Wondering if anyone has this head unit and where they mounted it at? Main concern is it not fitting in a typical boat mounting slot and still allow the cover to close!

Re: Sony CDX-HS70MW

This unit appears to be a marine head unit and shouldn't require the typical cover. A lot of dedicated marine head units are oversized because people replace non-marine units and they typically had one of the splash guards it sounds like you are talking about.

-----------------------------Features of this head unit --------------------
Marine Ready: The Sony CDX-HS70MW AM/FM/CD player is designed for use in a marine environment. To protect the unit from water spray, waves, rain, moisture, ultraviolet rays the unit has undergone the following tests to ensure reliability and functionality.

* Water resistant front panel- IPx5 certified
* Salt fog resistant - Tested under ASTM B117
* UV resistant - Tested under ASTM G154
* Conformal coated circuit board

Note: Only the front panel of this is water resistant. Select carefully the mounting location to avoid internal damage by water entering the unit.

Water Resistant Front Panel: The Marine CD player features a fold-down splash-proof plastic front panel with a locking switch on the top of the face to prevent moisture from getting inside the CD mechanism. The unit also features a plastic chassis cover and a rubber gasket to help with preventing moisture and corrosion around the chassis. The face is not detachable.

Mounting: The Sony CDX-HS70MW must be custom mounted. It does not meet the E/I/J size regulations. The unit comes with a template for cutting out the appropriate size hole for the unit to slide into. Instead of using a sleeve or side-panel screws to hold the unit in place the unit is secured by 6 screws that mount from the front of the unit and one rear support bracket. For flexibility of installation, this unit can be mounted between 0 (horizontal) and 45 degrees.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
This unit requires you to cut a hole using the template and secure it using the rubber gasket & screws through the radio's face. If you removed your splash guard would you be able to cut/mount this unit where your old radio was? Do you not have an old radio? Most radio's are mounted where the driver can adjust the volume/turn it down if he needs to talk to the passengers.
(Kenwood makes a nice unit that WILL slide into a normal single din hole KDC-232MR)
