Can anyone explain to me how a starter assist solenoid works on an OMC stringer motor. I do not fully understand why there are 2 primary wires going to the solenoid when in theory it only needs one since it is grounded to the motor by the holding bracket . I'm sure I will understand it once it is explained. Thanks

because the solenoid coil is not electrically connected to the mounting bracket. one leg of the coil goes to one terminal which has a ground wire, the other leg of the coil goes to the other terminal which has the start wire.

The assist solenoid is an electrical switch that when given a small electric current from the key switch (start) it closes. When the relay contacts close (the switch) main power under higher current flows from the battery directly thru the contacts to the starter. So the relay is used so high current does not go up to the key and back down to the starter
