Had the boat out last weekend and noticed some water had gotten on the top of the battery, should my battery be in a box? Does it matter that it got wet at all? 1995 Celebrity 18 foot with 5.0 Volvo Penta.

If it's in an enclosed area, it doesn't need a box. It does need to be secured down in some way though.

I like to use a box in case the battery boils over and it also covers the wiring for safety. As well as holding the battery securely. Some cheap insurance.

The deal is to have the battery secured so it can't move, and to have the terminals isolated so that nothing can hit them and produce sparks. One way to meet both requirements is with an enclosed, secured box. The other is to have the battery secured in a tray with those rubberized red and black covers over the terminals. My boat is set up with the second method.

Getting some water on the battery case won't hurt anything.

Agree with both and that is how one of my boats is set up. My pontoon has boxes.
