C C 294, Tach issue

I have a C C 294, twin Merc 230 (305 cid) The Left engines tach does not read, When I energize the ignition key the tach needle swings half way up the dial and settles back on pin but does not register when engine fires. The right engine does not swing up on the dial when key is on, but registers when engine is running. Everything seems to be connected correctly. Could I have a bad tach?

Probably, to prove it out, swap the tach and see if it moves
