Battery charger question

I have a battery charger, but no manual. The charger has a 12v or 24v setting switch. It also has a Charge or Activate switch. What is the Activate position for? I have never used it. Don't know what it it's function could be. I usually use the 12v and charge settings never "activate"

Ya know, asking about a particular battery charger without tell us model and make is kind of rough to answer a question about it
