Ok, Im going to work on that tomorrow.

Today I got the flywheel and woodruff key back in place. I was able to get it to crank over, so we are good there. No fire though, as I think my battery is bad. Ive had it on the charger at 2 amp for almost a week now, but it gives way under load. It would only crank with a plug out. At least I know that it will at least crank. That being said, Im moving forward with the entire project, no hesitation. My big worry was that crank and the threads. Knowing that is ok im confident.

The only other thing I worked on today was the engine cover. I removed the evinrude plaques and the old staples that held the gasket in place. I have a new gasket but it never fit right because of the staples. My plan is to sand it down and fill the holes with bondoglass and repaint it white. Im looking for someone that will paint a cool flag or something and the evinrude logo on it. If I cant find someone ill just order some new evinrude decals. At some point Im going to repaint the rest of the motor white as well.

Tomorrow Im going to try and get the majority of my bondoglass work done on the cover and the boat itself and get my templates made for my trim for the bow.

I used the bond glass on the top of the boat to fill the holes and also on the motor cover. Worked out well, I'm pleased with how it turned out.

I'll have some up tomorrow. I've been working on little bits and pieces. I got my motor cover sanded and primed and started on my trim pieces today. I should have them done tomorrow and hopefully the motor painted. I also ordered a nice set of custom evinrude decals. They are going to look real slick. Hopefully I have a helper coming Thursday to help cut the deck. Then I need to waterproof it. I decided to go with exterior grade ply with spar.

How long should I wait in between coats?

here are some pics of the bondoglass work. there are some imperfections, but they will be hidden by the trim.

Heres my trim mocked up. I had to cut the fron piece to make the curve. I couldnt get it to bend the way it was. I dont like it, but its not too bad. I still have to cutback the aluminum behind it too. Im also going to add some bracing as well. 10985885_1112408138776731_1526552959433237649_n.jpg

Heres the awesome motor decal I found on Ebay. The entire motor is going to get painted white.

I had help today to do the deck, we were able to use all the old pieces as templates. Now I just need to get it sealed. Im going with minwax helmsman spar varnish. 4-5 coats.

1) is that overkill?
2) how should I apply it? roller and brush?

I also started painting the motor and cover until I ran out of paint. The guy at the hardware store said it would cover in one coat and a pint would do the whole thing. I got the cover and half of the motor and it will need a second coat. Im going to wetsand inbetween to get rid of the fish eyes, and again after the second coat. Im going to use rattle can clearcoat on the cover too.

What grit should I use for first and second coats and should I wetsand the clear?

I wet sanded the motor cover tonight woth 220. My question is after the second coat when I do it again, how will I get it to shine? It's a gloss paint im using and after sanding it dulled it a bit.

Also can I thin it to make it go on smoother with less orange peel? I'm using the roll-roll method.

What paint? Are you using hardener in the paint? Final sanding should be 320 or 500 grit wet sanding with "Wet Water" (dish soap in the water) Then wipe down with Mineral Spirits and Clear coat. Clear coat should yield high gloss finish.

The paint was rustoleum. Not marine paint, just plain acrylic epoxy. The coverage was very bad with it. I ended up finishing the rest of the motor with a rattle can and it looks decent. Im going to put a final coat on the cover with a rattle can as well, then logo then rattle can clear.

I got 3 coats of spar on the deck, and ran out. I was going to get more to finish it, then I saw a version of DryLok at the hardware store that claims to be waterproof and can be used on masonry, concrete or wood. I needed a gallon of white paint to paint the deck anyways, so my plan is to put 2 coats of this on instead of just one coat of paint. I think that should give me enough protection... 5 coats total. Im going to put my anti slip additive in the first coat only, as last time i used it bare feet was a bit rough to walk with on it. Im also going to use the same paint up the inside of the front of the hull, as it needs to be painted anyways because it used to be hidden by the bow. I also painted my controls, although im very unhappy with how they came out. I scuffed and cleaned them, but there are a few spots where the paint wouldnt even stick! I painted the body of them green, and will do the top of the throttle white as well as the cover. I have an extra evinrude decal that came with my engine decals that im going to put on it.

I seem to be having the hardest time painting lately. I seem to remember when i first painted the boat it went on nice and smooth, good coverage. Seem like all the paints ive used are needing more coats. The green im using is rustoleum and its going on very blotchy. I had it shaken, and i stirred it with a stick. I have 3 coats so far and will need one more.

any ideas whats going on?

Heres todays work:

That probably explains the reason for the blotchiness. A good primer not only enhances bonding of the color coat it also helps blend the color and avoid what you're experiencing.

Ya I should have primed first. I thought I could get away with it because when I painted it before I didnt and it came out great. I think the big difference is that I used a much higher quality paint. It was an actual marine topside paint. It was given to me by someone, and I would have never been able to afford it otherwise. I finished the top of the boat, and it looks okay. Im not really happy with it but its decent. Im going to leave the hull the way it is for now and get the rest of the boat put back together so I can use it. Then Im going to prime and paint the green portion. Im really stressed out by the way the paint is coming out, seeing as it went on so nice and easy the first time.

I also worked on my controls. I painted the case green and the top of the handle and shift buttons white. It came out ok. I used a rattlecan on that. I still need to fab up a new outside cover for the controls, as the old plastic one broke sometime over the last few years.

I did get my trim finished up for the bow section.

I painted the topside of my boat with the same Rustoleum Pro Acrylic Enamel paint that you're using. I did Spray it with a Harbor Freight Spray gun but...It went down smooth as silk with great coverage. I did use the hardener and I did prime it. Not quite sure why you're having a coverage issue. We've had a LOT of members that have used Rustoleum on their aluminum boats with GREAT results. Haven't heard of issues like you're having. As with any paint, it's all about the prep work. It's gotta be smooth and flat and contaminant free for everything to work as it's supposed to.;)

Andy!!!! What are you doing? LOL Looking good old friend. I can't believe you labeled the motor with an "85" you missed the opportunity to make that motor a 300!! well maybe next time. The motor looks great and you are doing fine. I remember that boat way back when it was restored the first time. We will talk soon. My hours at work have become super crazy and honestly...... my SS is still covered up in my yard. Not only have I been missing the boat, the forum and fishing but working too many hours.

Keep up the good work on the boat. Bob
