Does this look like a transom crack or is it just the fiberglass cracking?

Wouldn't inspire confidence in me at all! If you put a fair bit of pressure on the lower unit, does the transom flex at all?

The aluminum plate may prevent much transom flex, but the crack inside the splashwell, just outbound of the transom clamp/thru bolts, suggests there is a fair amount of work in your very near future (this winter or at least well BEFORE the next boating season).

This comes to mind:

Uhmmm, I'm about 99.999999999% certain that your transom is TOAST and needs to be immediately replaced!!!!!;)

Yes, my money is on the fact that there is no transom. Welcome to, "the other side".
