I've got a good idea how to do this, but... check twice do it once...

I'm having to move my gas vapor vent, leaving me a hole about 3/4 in diameter. Obviously I'd like to fill it now while my gas tank is out!

Plan is from inside, taper the hole, tape the exterior hole, fill with PB and some gradually larger layers of mat.

Different suggestions or references to posts please!

That hole is not structural, so it is no big deal. A piece of FG cloth on the inside. Let it harden, and fill from the outside with marine poly putty. Sand it smooth. You can skip the cloth on the inside if you want. It was to give a bit of backing to the putty. Or resin a wood dowel into the hole and leave 1/8" on the outside for putty.

If you are not concerned with cosmetic appearance you can effect the repair from the outside the same you described way...only because it would be easier...
You can also use a piece of cardboard wrapped in wax paper to back up the hole...
Otherwise you are spot on with the procedure...
