Restoring my 1974 Starcraft Chieftian / Starchief 18 O/B.

Serial Number: STR03055M74A

Put down a new floor and carpet on interior about 18 years ago when I thought I new what I was doing but now I realize I didn't know **** back then. It is need of a overhaul and hopefully I wont have to do it again.

Well, for an 18yr old resto that you 'didnt' know what you were doing, it looks like it faired better then some of the tin tubs that have been resto'd.

How'd you glue the 2 sheets of 3/4" ply together? Looks like you've already sealed the transom ply. Epoxy/Spar? Other?

Welcome to the tin-sanity

Welcome to the drydock, A11. She fared well enough in your hands. 18 years ago, the Starmada wasn't even a gleam in anyone's eye. Times have changed for the better.

New transom built this weekend...

What kind of plywood is that?... looks too pretty to be an exterior grade, or maybe it's marine grade?

Did Machinegun Kelly use that transom for target practice?... day-yum at all the holes!!!

That's a very sweet boat with lots of potential, show us how pretty you can make her!

Thanks for the welcome guys, new to the forums here.

The transom is actually two pieces of 5/8" marine grade plywood laminated together with waterproof 'Gorilla Glue' and held tight with 10 clamps overnight.

The next day I applied two thick coats of marine epoxy. That stuff is amazing, watertight for sure.

Nice - you've obviously taken care of it - that paint job doesn't look 18 years old. Look forward to the rebuild, and welcome to iboats and the Starmada.

LOL Yes lots of holes to fill...

Next week I hope to remove all the hardware and seperate the cabin from the hull...

Then prep them both for paint... which will require LOTS of sanding, as Willy well knows....

Oh yah, there may be a wasp nest in the cabin... I'll let you guys know how that turns out...

Wasp nests you say! :heh: I know just the thing for them critters, check my Chief thread. Oh yeah another Chief added to the fleet!!! :welcome: A11. Looking forward to seeing more and I will be along for the ride.

Since your at that point now with your tear down, there's one thing you may want to consider in your restore and that is hull stiffeners. Us guys with the old SC's are retro fitting with them for piece of mind due to the design flaw SC had which causes cracks to form along the rib ends and spray rail. If you want to take a look inside my Chief for what I did buzz over to my dry dock thread. Bluefin and Granddad also did some serious work in the same area.

Looking good so far :thumb:

Welcome to the Starmada! :welcome:

That 18 year-old paint job is still lookin' pretty snazzy!

great job on the transom!!

+1 with what waterman is suggesting...let us know if you do decide to shore-up that outer-chine / spray rail. Some ways are easier+stronger than others
