Hello Fellows, Not sure if this is the right discussion board but here goes.

Bought a boat from Mass and I'm changing the hull registration numbers to NY. The boat is a '95 and the hull has some fading but not that much.

Anyway I can blend-in the imprint left from the old numbers to the the slightly faded hull?

I'd like to try and get it a little more even so the new numbers will look a little more "like" it wasn't changed.

Yep ^^^ Also depends on what color the gelcoat was before it faded and how badly it's faded.

Someone on the forum is extremely pleased w/ how their efforts turned out, but I think the old info still stands out way too much:
Before:
attachment.php

After:
attachment.php

Apologies to its ^^^ owner.

It does look better, but the old is still much more visible then I'd like.

Yes I was thinking an electric buffer and I have a couple different compounds to work with.

The original color is off white. The fading makes the imprint stand out at least a couple of shades, but not too bad. Definitely noticable.

I'll attach a picture as soon as I can.

The info on the above picture stands out a little more than I would want it to.

Before you do the compounding I'd also recommend you do some wet sanding with some 320 grit wet/dry sand paper. Then some 400 and finally 600. Then Use some Aqua Buff 1000 and finish up with some Aqua Buff 2000. Hopefully you have a VS buffer. 1200 rpm with the AB 1000 and 2500 rpm with the 2000. You may not get rid of the shaddow completely but you should see a big improvement. Follow up with a wax and buff and you're good to go

Wet sanding is your friend. Personally I would start with something along the lines of 600 then go up. If you are careful im sure you could start more aggressively but I stay with the side of caution.

I have done the same thing on several boats and have yet to find anything that removes 100% of the shadow left from the stickers. You can eliminate almost all of it and in time the sun will cure the rest.
