I purchased a Lewmar Pro-Sport 550 Windlass and now I want to try and build a bow pulpit. Ive never built one before so all suggestions are welcome.

Measuring and planning took some time, but I have everything on paper, templates are cut out, and lamination of the plywood has begun. Over all measurements are 46"L X 14"W tapering down to 11"

Had some time to work on her tonight, 1 layer of csm and two layers cloth.
Can any provide tips on getting the final coat of poly very level,... I will be gel coating so the more level the surface the less sanding/fairing. I will level the piece w/ a 4' level before pouring.

If you put some Hardener in the Oil Based Paint it will enhance the gloss and make the Paint almost like Gelcoat.;)

Thank You WOG,..I did ask the Lowes guy about the Valspar hardener you spoke of in previous threads,.... but he had no clue,..even better yet, he was a 'Valspar Rep'.
But,..never the less I will continue my search for some hardener,... Question; will regular Poly-hardener work ?

Nope, where are you located, what city? Got a Tractor Supply or any Advanced Auto stores that sell Auto Paint?

Re: Building a bow pulpit

Tractor Supply Carries Majic Paint and they have their own brand of Hardener for the Tractor Paint It will work with any Acrylic Enamel Oil Based Paint.

Yep, 2 oz per quart so that's 1/2 oz per cup. You stir it in and let it set for 10 mins stir again set for 10 mins stir again set for 10 mins then apply It has to COOK for a total of 30 mins before you apply it to catalyze the paint. And once it's Catalyzed it's only good for 4 hours after that the paint is NO GOOD soooo Only mix what you're gunna use. I also reccommend thinning with 10 to 15% acetone to make it flow a bit better. Thin it AFTER it's Cooked!!

Third coat using WOG's recipe,... layed out real nice,...I may have used a tad too much acetone cause it layed out a bit thin, and I coulda def spent more time sanding and fairing,...key word being 'time',..... I need to be 'IN' by Sunday!

Re: Building a bow pulpit

Its mounted, wired and working awesome!,... the color is much 'whiter' than the SR off white,.. but I knew that. Think Ill put some teak strips on top to tone it down it a bit!.
Ok,.. now I have to figure out how to do a rope to chain splice so it will feed into the windlass.
