17 foot starcraft rebuild

Hi all.

A friend of mine gave me a 1984 17' 6" Starcraft with a 115 HP Johnson with the floor partially torn out. The boat was sealed up and he said a squirrel or something ate through the cover. Then the boat sat for a couple years.
The motor runs good so I was looking for another body to put the good motor on. However after months of wasting my time looking at boats that were listed on Craigslist I just got pissed off and decided to go through and rebuild this one. Atleast I will know what I have. On Easter day I took out the rest of the floor, most of the foam and most of the rotten stringers. I cut the stringers at the top hoping that the pre-existing fiber glass will help with support and also provide a marker to where the stringer is supposed to go. I?m pretty sure with the condition of the stringers the transom will need to be replaced. I will be replacing it later wether or not it needs it. My plan is to install the stringers and floor (as much as I can) before pulling the cap off to replace the transom.

I am looking for advice as I go through this project and I have found the most knowledgeable people here (don?t let your heads get too big lol). I guess with that some of my background and what my intensions are for the boat is needed.

I have been a professional diesel mechanic for 20 years and worked on cars with my dad as a kid. Now I have an engineering job. I have a very large selection of tools so I can do just about anything. Also I refuse to say that I cannot do something.
The main purpose of this boat will be to fish. I will also be using the boats to take the kids tubing every so often.

Hey lith - welcome to the drydock. Sorry to say your pics didn't come through and I don't know why. Tried a couple of things, but not working. Here are some tips for picture posting: http://

Don't mind Woodonglass. He wants a tin boat so bad he can taste it. :D He even helps us TinHeads, just as we help the glass guys. And plenty of help in the forums because we're all into boating. Good luck and git 'er done.

Pick out any spot here in the Starcraft drydock. As long as it's way, way down on the end and downwind. Us Tin boys don't like to itch. Enjoy your stay and have some fun.

EDIT - You fixed the links while I was posting.

You know....this thread raises a few soul searching questions.

1 Would gutting a starcraft glasser to save a starcraft tinny be cannibalism?

2 Would it be wrong to let out an evil laugh like we do when sawzalling any other glasser if the one being cut up is a starcraft?

3 When is Wood going to come out of the closet and stop denying he's really a tinner at heart?

1 Would gutting a starcraft glasser to save a starcraft tinny be cannibalism? It's survival of the fittest, isn't it?

2 Would it be wrong to let out an evil laugh like we do when sawzalling any other glasser if the one being cut up is a starcraft? There should be a moment of silence before the maniacal cackle. Shared DNA and maker, you know.

3 When is Wood going to come out of the closet and stop denying he's really a tinner at heart? He's been close to snagging a tinny. We'll keep egging WOG on.

Re: 17 foot starcraft rebuild

Before you spend to much time gutting the hull and cash on it, run a compression and spark check on the outboard fuel systems on these things are easy and cheap, ignition components are expensive and if the motor isn't worth it you would be better using it for a donor, and parting out the motor.

Also do yourself a favor, go to this great website and buy a brand new fuel pump for the motor, you want a Pre 1983 V4 model fuel pump cut the VRO pump off and convert it to premix.

It will cost $85 dollars or so and the piece of mind is money well spent.

Then when you are done itching buy a tin Starcraft and thank us later.

NOW I have REALLY opened a can of worms Fiberglass Vs Tin, and Vro VS. Premix.

I like to follow the K.I.S.S. Rule lower maintenance and less worry.

Re: 17 foot starcraft rebuild

Hey lith - I just looked back at your first post and saw the word "free". Did you get paperwork for her? If you didn't, don't do much until you know she can be registered. We have too many stories about missing titles, etc. and the boats turn into planters.

Re: 17 foot starcraft rebuild

Just an update. All of the stringers and fiberglass has been removed. I've got a few more cuts to make and I will be cutting my wood to dry fit.

Cut all the wood for my stringers this weekend and dry fit all the pieces. I couldnt start glue-ing and glassing because its supposed to rain the next four days. I will update with pics at the end of the week.
