Today was the start of my winter project. I picked up a new to me 1982 Glastron Hpv165 with a 19 who knows what for sure 115 hp frankenjohnson that took some work to get running good but that side of it worked out pretty darn good.
As for the bad news. After noticing things that would be a big red flag to an experienced boat owner like small surface cracks etc... I began to ask questions and eventually start to dig. What I found was a lot of rot!
So I decided that this boat restoration would in fact be my learning experience and project to keep me busy through our 6 usual months of ice , cold and snow.
I have learned more than I could possibly mention from this great community so I hope I can learn even more as this is a particularly intimidating undertaking for me. However, I'm also sure it will be a great time and extremely rewarding! So in advance, thanks to everyone!!!:)

So I got started today on my project. I went out and picked up my engine hoist and some lumber to start building my engine stand/work area. I took the advice, experience, pics and supplied drawings of a few of the other members of the forum and tried to come up with something that will work for me in my work area.
Now please keep in mind that it is not a finished product. I plan to be able to tilt and run from my stand so any advice is welcome.
I still need to build in forward facing supports down about mid height in the front on an angle for more strength and piece of mind. I would also like at some point to add a tank so I can run the motor pumping water in and out.

I dont know why I cant get the pics straightened out but I promise I'll work on that one for sure. Here's where I ended up after a few hours of working on it today.20131020_192607.jpg20131020_192619.jpg20131020_192654.jpg

I hope for sure that it will work cause I dont want to learn that one the hard way, lol.
I think the pic problem is that I am taking the pics with a notebook and I had done just exactly that. I turned it sideways to try and get wider angle but it backfired. So with the work that I did on the stand today, I did just the opposite. I guess I'll see if it worked out.
Anyhow, I went back to the store and picked up a few more things and hopefully now I have a safe, finished product. I ended up tieing the bottom back side together, adding another board to the top sides and back using some long lag bolts and added some angle iron brackets to help tie it together on the top.
I then added some side kickers on the bottom front and last, I added the extra angle brace from almost mid point down. Hopefully I have all angles of possible structural failure covered. I guess I will soon find out.

Sorry about the brutal sideways pics. Looks like im gonna have to try something else. Anyway this is the finished product except for the idle tank and plumbing.

Ok. Hopefully that's a lot better! I know, it's about darn time! And I threw my wiper picture in there just for the heck of it.:) I guess tomorrow it's time to assemble the engine hoist. And then the true test, will it hold?

Re: 1982 Glastron Hpv165 bass boat restoration.

Today I assembled the engine hoist and lined everything up to see how I may go about removing the motor from the hull and then mounting it on my stand. It seems like it should roll under right how it would need to.
Im right out of excuses for pulling the motor off so I think if all goes well, tomorrow is the day. If anyone can offer me any last minute advice, I would really appreciate it. This is my first attempt at pulling a boat motor and from what I can tell, I think I just have to hoist into the mount eye, pull the cables, tilt/trim wiring, steering tube and linkage, 4 mount bolts and everything should be good.
If I have missed anything or the motor should be placed in some type of specific configuration I would appreciate the advice. Other than that, I think tomorrow is the day. Thanks as usual to everyone!

I think you've got everything covered. The Steering tube can be a problem sometimes but then again sometimes not!!!!:D Good luck with your engine removal.

Yep ^^^. Very straight forward. I did mine first time around and there's nothing to it. As wood said, the steering tube can sometimes be an issue. With mine it was... and all I had to do was slide the motor over once I got it freed up off the transom to make more room for the steering cable and get enough clearance to get it out of the tube. Also I labeled everything so there's no questions when I'm putting things back together.
Good Luck!!!

Thank you both. After I read your replies I had another look at the tube. The way it mounts in between the two sides of the transom, im pretty sure I will have to do it just like you did further.
It may even have to be soaked for a bit while suspended to break it loose. I'm thinkin it's been on there for a good long time.

Re: 1982 Glastron Hpv165 bass boat restoration.

Well, I guess everything worked out pretty well. I did have to hoist the motor up a bit before I pull the steering tube out. There just really wasn't enough room without doing so. I just hope I remember that when it goes back on.
I did mount the motor up to the stand once and then remove it again because I decided to do a few small add on pieces to the stand just for piece of mind I guess. But at least I know now for sure that I can access it every part of the motor pretty easily when I do the motor portion of my restore.
I guess it's time now to start stripping the hull so I can work at pulling the cap off. This seems to pretty rewarding so far, even with just the little I've done. I think I will like this project.

Nice job on the engine stand, it'll take a lot more than a 115 crash that.

Thanks budski. It seems pretty darn stout. I'm hoping it will even withstand a small shaker too.

Nice job on the engine stand, looking at the transom after you removed the engine, you can see some dents in the outside glass work, right were the motor mounts up. Looks as though you will have some rot in that transom area behind that area. Good luck with getting that classic back on the water.

Re: 1982 Glastron Hpv165 bass boat restoration.

Thanks greenbush future! Yeah, I took a few small diameter drill bit core samples and the transom material came out like a wet sponge. If you look kind of close you can see right where I drilled it. 1 hole one each side by the top motor mount holes and 1 on each side at the bottom of the transom.
Its gonna be a lot of work but im pretty excited about doing it and getting back on the water. Thanks for the reply.
