hi everyone,

just bought a another boat nothing fancy just a 16 ft mirrocraft super fisherman sc with a little 35hp Johnson motor...

well normally I would take the boat out and test it on the water before buying, but in this case I couldn't and was assured it was in good shape and only had a minor leak. so I already planned to remove the floor (easy 1 for a change) and tighten/gluvit all the rivets.

so long story short I take it to my camper right after I buy it and was going to take it out and try but the weather didn't let me (which was a good thing) so bring the boat home and it rains here sunday night no big deal I bring the boat into the garage and see water dripping from the bottom of the boat again no biggy it rained so trailer was wet ...... so I thought come to find out the plug was in the boat and rain put a couple inches of water in her.

after awhile its still dripping I start looking around and cant see any reason for it to be leaking from the hull. I start taking the seats and seat bases out and I see the seat base in the back of boat is broken look into the hole and low and behold there's a hole in the hull the same size as the seat base pin !!!!! it had been broken awhile and had worn through after awhile.

heck if I had taken it on the water I would have been sunk literally  LOL .... anyway I just wish he had told me it had a BAD leak instead of lying about it (im sure he didn't know why or where it was leaking just that it was)

the hole is between a nickel and quarter in size right above the center keel easy fix with a patch and some 3m 5200 and closed end rivets.

check out the picture below lol

jig,

nothing wrong the motor runs great !! trust me I am a carefull buyer and I think what happened is when he had it on the water the seat base pin was acting like a plug and not letting more water in than it should have.... but once I took the seats out it was like pulling the plug...

at any rate its going to be an easy fix ans should turn out nice now that I decided to make it the way I want :)

then I will need some advice :)

by the way I got her for 1k and she had 2 electric anchors and an electric winch for the trailer but im not a lazy fisherman, so those are already gone :)

I am glad you avoided disaster. Thanks to mother natures intervention (rain). It truly is a buyer beware market. 9 out of 10 people will do anything in their power to scam you for a dollar. I think all of the 1 out of 10's frequent this forum. LOL

Re: why are so many people not honest when selling boats/vehicles ?

stinkin, you are right on, it just drives me nuts because when I sell a boat or car I tell the person everything that's wrong with it then its up to them if they want to buy it or not.... I never hold back lol

well here are the pics of the boat here I have the floor out already and another pic of the hole in the floor...

I still have to take out the console and sides with the foam under them and take the motor off..

its 16ft long and is 74 inches wide and 33 inches deep so not a bad size boat.... will be a nice fishing boat for me (and daughter when she is home lol) a lot lighter and easier to load/unload by myself than my 17 1/2 ft sea nymph :)

Re: why are so many people not honest when selling boats/vehicles ?

I don't think the seller was being dishonest in the first place. He did say there was a leak. His mistake was saying it was a minor one. He should have said leak and left it that. It is up to you the buyer to determine the scale of that leak, not the seller. If a seller say the engine makes a tapping sound, it's up to you to determine what the tapping sound is and decide whether to buy or not.
I don't think anyone on this forum would deliberately try to sell something that was knowingly in a dangerous condition, maybe on Crooks List (sorry Craigs List). If you've owned a boat or a vehicle for a good while, then you probably know every inch of it and know what's good, what's worn and what needs fixing. When you try to sell and labor too much on what's wrong with the item, then don't be surprised if you don't sell it. I want to buy something that's good, NOT a pile of problems.
Some people lie, others are just economical with the truth!
Always Buyer Beware. The onus is ALWAYS on the Buyer.

Re: why are so many people not honest when selling boats/vehicles ?

british, was a time not all that long ago we didn't have to worry about that kind of thing, a handshake made the deal and you didn't have to worry..... ahhh the good old days .

ok the boats back in the garage and a bit cleaner.... darn leaves starting to fall already lol.

now its time to get the side supports/foam holding things off :) and the rail down the middle out so I can get it all cleaned out and ready for the repair. then will be a trip to town to buy some wood 3m 5200 and what ever else I can think of that I might need so I don't make a million trips lol .

I know ive seen posts on here about painting so will have to do some digging to find them again . once I get the inside all cleaned out will flip her and start getting ready for paint. now time to get to work ......

Re: *new title* hole repair and new floor and decking

ok got the boat all cleaned out and this is what I have to repair ..

the hole is the size of the seat base pin and it is right in the middle of the center keel.... any ideas on how I can fix this ? I was thinking about using a patch and closed end rivets but as I said its on the keel and the rivets are not long enough to go through the hull and keel.... so my next thought was using a patch and stainless screws along with a ton of 3m 5200 sealer sandwiched between.

any and all help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Can you form a patch from the inside and not need to get all the way through the keel?

Re: *new title* hole repair and new floor and decking

Patch it with aluminum, rivers and gluvit or 5200

If it was mine ....... I would use the gluvit and do the entire hull (rivets and seams). Just for insurance I would also gluvit it some pieces of 3/4" plywood stacked up to take up the space below the deck where the pedestals mount to prevent any future pointed pressure.

LOL it was a minor leak since the keel only has weep holes!

java,

that's what im trying to figure out there isn't enough room to use rivets without going thru the keel :(

bob,

was planning on using 5200 then once dry hit everything with gluvit but nas stated above not enough room to rivet without drilling in a very small erea which im afraid may weaken it more.

Re: *new title* hole repair and new floor and decking

hey every one,

well was able to get some more done today, all the foam is out and the side foam housings/supports are out....

now I need to replace the transom wood (figured I would) see pic. the very back of the foam was wet that went against the transom wood and of course there is where it rotted.... oh well might as well do it all now and right then I shouldn't have to worry about it for along time...

kind of at a stand still until I can go get my wood for the transom and waiting on my 5200 to get here as no one here in town carried it and I had to order it online.

it gives me time to think about how I want the front/back deck layouts to be :)

I was thinking about your dilemma this morning and remembered a great source for aluminum pieces that will work as a patch.

Visit a junk yard and get an old aluminum mudflap or old aluminum running board. It is usually diamond plated only on one side but adequate thickness.

Hammered into place a single rivet or two with 5200 will hold it fine. It will not be subjected to direct water pressure ;)

Re: *new title* hole repair and new floor and decking

bob, thanks for the great idea, when I was tearing everything out of the boat I found that they had used trim pieces on each side of the boats lower deck that were made from scrap hull material about 10 wide... so I should be able to use a piece of that as a good patch once my 5200 gets here....

bob, I wish we had a home depot here yet, but ours closed down about 10 years ago ....

we just got back from menards with some of the needed wood.... but only what I could fit in the back of my blazer as it wasn't a planed stop so didn't bring the trailer.... and no menards does not carry 5200 :(

Re: *new title* hole repair and new floor and decking

Your boat is very similar to mine, I just (95%) finished. One thing I did not do, is trash the foam and should have. Not knowing a bunch about this type of thing (restoring boats, as opposed to cars) makes me know that I will pull the thing apart this winter and get rid of the foam. My boat is a 1988 Sylvan Bass boat. Decent layout with the deck and seats. I'm holding off with placing two seats. While it is apart I will replace the transom wood, like you are planning. Anyway, if you are any good, even half good with a torch, you can get Aluminum Brazing Rod and patch the hole without glues and patches. Ace Hardware and Harbor Freight sells the rod made by Forney. You can look it up on Youtube, to see how it works. Pretty slick really.

To fix that hole, I'd drill out the 4 rivets in the pic (2 holding the keel and 2 holding the keel and rib) and place the patch on the inside slathered with 5200 then replace the 4 rivets will closed end blind rivets:
